No it was 4 downs for 10 yards by that time, but just 2-4 years before it was 3 downs for five yards.
Also a strategy at the time was to kick early, anyone could recover a punt (ie, it was a free ball).
College football changed more between the years of 1905 and 1914, than it has since that time.
Any football records before 1906 should be counted as American rugby, 1906 is when you get the farward pass that made football what it is today.
