Parents were afraid of this movie.
Imagine the time period it came out, mid-80s.
Ferris Beuller and Pretty in Pink came out the same year...Breakfast Club (which was considered dark and risque at the time with teen issues and angst) came out the year before.
I think by the time Kids came out public wasn't shocked what young people were doing.

I’m not easily shocked, but Gummo is really out there.
But it’s not a teen movie IMO. It’s just an experimental film made by a guy who has just written a shocking movie that was marketed to a teen and college aged audience, a few years prior.
