17 of 20 titles between 1983 and 2002 were won by 8 schools who were either past champions or won multiple titles in the 20 year span. There were only 3 schools who won their only title in that time frame. 6 of 9 champions between 2013 and 2022 won their first and only title and 8 overall in the last 20 CWS have only one title ever. 7 schools with multiple championships historically have won 12 of the last 20. Those numbers suggest as many top programs, but more parity making it difficult to win multiple times.

During the 80s and 90s there was a group of about 15 schools. And you could pretty much guarantee that 3/4 of the field in Omaha every year would made up of teams from that group.
