Yep. Here during this part of the year, you've got to catch them about 4:30 am. We don't have skipjack here, just threadfin and gizzard.

We have blueback herring here as well as threadfin and gizzard shad...and they make up most of the catch. We have bait shops locally that sell live herring and shad but it ain't cheap and they require kid gloves or they get lethargic and die quicker than the ones caught in a net. The frsh caught bait is more productive in my opinion. Its usually healthier and friskier...they all start slowing down the minute they hit a bait tank but transporting them to a bait shop and having them in even the best bait tanks slows them down considerably.
