You never give up on your kid. See him as much as you can. Move to the country if you can. Get lawyers and get custody so the kid can come stay with you for the summer. Do whatever the hell you need to do to see your kid.
If it works out that it's just once a year, oh well. Never stop.
Never force anything on the kid. If he doesn't want to hug or whatever, so be it. You're his dad and you're there NO MATTER WHAT.
The only thing you can do is do your damn best to be with him as much as possible. The rest is out of your control. He will grow up and your relationship will get better. He will be much happier remembering his dad being there, even if it was rare, vs his dad not communicating with him in years.
