Can you point me to a source? Because I don't think that this is quite right. If I remember correctly, 1st-round picks are given fully-guaranteed contracts, but there's nothing that prevents a 2nd-round pick from getting one, and I think we gave Herb the same kind of contract that he'd have gotten if he were a 1st-round pick. I'm pretty sure that Herb was going to be a RFA after next season, if we hadn't declined the option to sign him to a new deal.

It’s 100% not correct as a blanket statement. Austin Reaves was just a high profile restricted free agent after his 2 year contract with the Lakers. Even two-way players are often restricted free agents.

There’s language on the nba website about restricted free agency that I interpret to mean: any player whose contract expires after playing 3 or less seasons becomes a restricted free agent instead of an unrestricted free agent (pending qualifying offer when applicable)

Just a well-thought-out agreement (of course, it couldn't be worked out ahead of time...before the Pels decided to drop their "team option" on Herb...because well uhhh... that just wouldn't be "right"). Benefits for both sides...by turning down the "team option"...among them, Pels got to adjust "money per year" starting this year, which will be quite helpful in the future and Herb got his guaranteed bag of the additional $52M on top of his $1.8M...& he doesn't have to worry (as far as $$ is concerned, anyway) about blowing out a knee this year.

Solid & fair deal by both sides...imo. It's almost like the guys that put this deal together, do this kinda stuff for a livin'...or something.
