But what if teams determine it’s not in their best interest to pay running backs and simply draft younger ones?

I get that, which is why the running back rookie scale should be higher than other positions because, outside of a few outliers, that first contract for them will likely be their biggest and longest.

I don’t know man. That would open Pandora’s box IMO. What about centers and guards compared to tackles? What about middle linebackers compared to pass rushers.

I feel like there are definite skills for running backs to work on that can prolong their careers. For example guys who can pass block well and are always in position on their assignments will likely have careers into their early 30s as it’s very relevant to the current nfl.

Similarly guys who run good routes out of the backfield and catch well will also likely have longer careers.

But let’s be honest. There are likely MANY NFL caliber athletes that can run for 4-5 ypc out of the backfield and occasionally break a longer one when they’re young and fresh if they focus solely on that. There aren’t nearly as many who can run fantastic routes or cover down the field.

But artificially inflating a pay scale for a position that simply isn’t as sought after isn’t really the answer to me. We don’t need equality of outcome for differently valued skills.

I'm sure teams will not take this into account and surely will continue drafting them where they previously would have been drafted.

Lol yall that definitely wouldnt cause a ton of issues.

What a dumb take

Its unfortunate but analytics show that RBs aren't as valuable as they used to be. And the 10th best RB in the league isn't really that much better than the 40th best RB in the league. It's more about scheme and O line play in todays NFL.

The guys paying the bills have come to realize it's a bad business decision to pay RBs long term. No one is at fault. It's just facts. This crop of RBs is just unlucky that they found out during their time to shine.

They will have to suffer with 5-15/yr mill contracts while WRs flourish with 15-30/yr mill contracts.
