Up to this point, I have 100% agreed with the adage that Dark Souls is “hard but fair”. This Ornstein and Smough fight is utter bullshite. Their having the ability to attack through one another as though the other weren’t there isn’t a reasonable mechanic. It’s just bullshite poor game design.

There’s my DS1 rant for today

Eta: Before GIT GUD, I beat them. The amount of pillar kiting just felt cheap and less rewarding than some other fights.

I somehow beat them on my first attempt but in no way was it because I was “gud” lol. I was so overpowered by that point due to souls farming a lot when I was struggling to get through areas. Also my build seemed well suited for them, and I inadvertently beat them both around the same time so I didn’t have to deal with their merged powers bullshite when you kill one of them.

Similarly my first playthrough of Elden Ring saw me beat Malenia on my second attempt. My second playthrough with a brand new character was much tougher. Probably took me 30 attempts. I got to her much quicker and was therefore a much lower level

Ornstein and Smough fight
Yeah, the clipping is really annoying there. But, if you keep them separate, it's not as bad. That was the fight that nearly ended my sl1 run. It's more a battle of luck and attrition than skill.
