And he is a DH when he isn't pitching, not someone who will have to throw the ball a few hundred extra times in the field.

doesnt Ohtani play DH every day?

I dont really think you can have your every day SS try and also pitch, but Ill leave that call up to Jay.

And he DHs when he doesn’t pitch right? He is not playing a field position. I know he can play outfield, but he usually doesn’t correct? I don’t watch MLB

He's just about the only one who's been given a real opportunity to do it at the professional level, because he demanded it as a condition upon leaving Japan and signing. I wish more would get the opportunity, but everyone is scared of their guys getting injured. Even though pitchers are far more likely to get hurt by pitching than they are by batting, this continues to be an issue for anyone with two-way talent.

College two-way players have been able to make it work for years. It's not an issue to do both, if you have the talent. It's a matter of people in charge having irrational fear of the unknown, uncontrollable injury monster.
