Both coaches underperformed with the talent they had imo
Winning one National Championship in 14 years is not underperforming, with any roster of talent that has ever been assembled anywhere in college baseball. Coaches who win a championship, make several trips to Omaha, and regularly advance to Super-Regionals, are not underperforming. The guys like Skip and handful of others who achieve more are OVERperforming. That's why Skip's jersey is retired, and there's a statue of him, and he's the GOAT. That's why guys like Auggie and Dedeaux are legends. Guys who get to the very top even once are doing a great job and are among the elite in the sport. Guys who do it repeatedly are singular category people. To compare it to football, there are no guys "like Saban" or "like Tom Osborne" or "like the Bear" or "like Rockney", etc. There are great coaches; Paul Manieri was one of them. Then there are the handful of singularly elite coaches that defy categorization; Skip was one of them. Jay Johnson appears a lock to be at least a great one. Hopefully, he can ascend even higher.
But even if he doesn't, and even if we'd lost in Omaha, he would not be "underperforming". At worst, he might have "failed to overperform". Thankfully, he didn't fail at all.

If JJ never wins another championship, people will say he underperformed here.
