The events aren’t in (essentially) chronological order. It’s just stuff that’s happened since 1989 that kinda rhymes. The brilliance of Joel’s version is the events are on a timeline AND kinda rhyme. There are a few clever lines here, but like a lot of things that copy from the past, it misses the essence of the original. It’s just simulacrum.

I love Billy Joel but We Didn't Start the Fire is kind of a shitty song after you listen to it more than once.
