I think there is a pre-2008 recession and post-2008 recession line of thinking with this.

Pre-2008, it was "go to college or fail in life"

right, but I still hear people my age and younger parrot that line and I always want to call bullshite.

Also, I moved around a bit and every school system I was in still had a robust shop/industrial arts program and a career center with automotive, electrical, etc. programs available.

It reminds me of when people say “why didn’t we learn about this is school?”. We did, you weren’t paying attention.
