Caveat that most of this has nothing to do with trades and is specific to my experience as a white collar worker…
For a lot of office jobs it’s simply a fact that you don’t have eight full hours of work to do every single weekday—not even most weekdays. Obviously, workers who are in the office all day long (probably) aren’t having sex and shopping during their work day, but they are wasting time surfing the Internet in their offices or shooting the shite with coworkers etc.
And it’s not a matter of laziness per se, because a lot of people who do that still get their shite done and do their part in keeping the company or agency running. It’s a matter of society still being organized around a 40-hour workweek even though the workload of many office employees isn’t 40 hours per week. This dovetails with the fact that real wages have grown much more slowly than productivity… compensation is appropriate for the work product, but your job is wasting an additional 10-20 hours of your week because you “have to be there for eight hours” even though you’ve got a four-hour workload.
