t. kirby-smith was the CONFEDERATE general in command of the trans-mississippi theatre once port allen fell. his command included all portions of louisiana, arkansas, texas, oklahoma, and missouri which were not in yankee hands.
his command centre was in shreveport, which was the last confederate command to surrender upon the cessation of the recent 4 years of unpleasantries . ..

It was never "deaf valley" There was a Deaf Valley Shell on Highland back in the 70s but that was about it. I have been around Tiger Stadium all my life and "deaf valley" was not in use.

something I read on a board long ago..
Baton Rouge( Red Stick )and therefore Tiger Stadium/Death Valley were built on a friendly boundary between 2 Indian tribes, which I believe were the Choctaw and Istrouma. The tree marking the boundary was a ceremonial butchering / sacrificial site for animals killed by the Indians. The dead animals were hung from the the tree (red stick) and 'cleaned' which is where the name 'Red (from the blood) Stick'/Baton Rouge originates. The area was also called 'Death Valley' by some of the early settlers due the sacrificial aspects of the 'red stick'. When Tiger Stadium was nick-named Death Valley (don't know the date), the reference was both to the rabid fans and the history of the 'Red Stick' area.

I don't remember the year of the law suit, but I do know that it wasn't that long ago that Clemson filed a law suit against LSU to try to stop the use of "Death Valley". But at some point during one of the hearings LSU was able to produce "historical" evidence (though I don't know whether they were talking about the stadium or just the location) that showed that "Death Valley" had been used in Louisiana prior to the first showing in Clemson. Therefore, Clemson was forced to drop the suit, and LSU declined to pursue it against Clemson.
Anyone else remember this? It was maybe 12 years ago or so.
