Kids may not really appreciate big cities unless there's a lot of kid activities to participate in.

They would remember seeing a few historic sites but if all you're planning on is sightseeing, restaurants, and shopping, they will get bored quick.

I would find somewhere to keep them interested. Some place with a resort like place they would have fun staying at. Or a place with experiences like sailing, horseback riding, hiking, etc. Experiences are far more rewarding that sightseeing for kids, in my opinion. I've never been overseas, so I don't have a specific place to recommend.

In the same boat with a 5 and 3 yo. Our plan is mayde do Alaska cruise (possibly Disney) soon, and do Yosemite the next year. First true international will be Iceland. Easy to get to, and a lot to see (horseback riding, northern lights, etc). Eventually (once oldest around 10-12) will do African safari, Galapagos, etc. Once the youngest gets to around 11-12, will start mixing in bigger european cities.
