I am sealing the travertine coping around my in ground pool. Was wondering if I should seal the grout as well? Or, should avoid the grout so as not to affect the copings ability to expand and contract. Don’t want to do anything to cause the coping to crack or become damaged. Any ideas about that? TIA.

Why are you sealing?

I’ve seen mixed responses on sealing the coping, and many saying it creates a very slick surface when sealed.

Just curious since mine is not sealed.

My salt pool is taking a toll on it. Starting to see lots of pitting. The pool is only a year old.

A good once a week hose off will help protect it some.

I have a chlorine pool with a Travertine deck. It is starting to pit as well, so my first thought was to seal it. Even had a crew lined up.

Talked to my pool guy and several others and they said Travertine is not meant to be sealed. The benefit of Travertine is that stays cool and does not get slick. Sealing it will make it slick and can do more damage than good.

While the pitting isn't ideal, the stone will last a long time. Hell the Roman Colosseum is made of mostly Travertine and its still standing.

Don’t seal it. Will be very slippery if so. You can grout in any major pits that could be dangerous.

What about brick coping good or bad choice?

We have kids in and out. We didn’t like the brick looking coping, preferring real brick but were advised against it fir durability.

Also it can be tough on the kids in and out
