Given how common 'being disowned' by their families is in that community, I'm guessing that we can make some conclusions on whether they were treated decently.
The question is who is doing the disowning? Again, why does them being estranged from their families necessarily have to mean they were not treated well by their families? Could the inverse not also be true?

You need to go out and talk to people more. Or read about the topic just to get some different perspectives. Because how you would handle it isn't the same as how most people did handle it.
People have a tendency of stretching the truth to gain sympathy points from others for their perceived plight as well.

Yep, "disown" usually means they dont approve of it.

Historically, the trend in the gay community was one of being rejected by the mainstream, which is why gay bars became so important. Given that we will only have one side of the story, like in this example, how exactly are we supposed to characterize the actions of a group as 'good' or 'bad' exactly? Of course there has to be some in-between, because your sexual orientation doesn't speak to your quality as a person. But what do you think the general trend was? Do you think every gay person who came out to their family was greeted lovingly or something? It seems like you are making a great effort to describe situations working out according to your imagination in place of looking at what evidence can be produced in this case.

Again, this can work both ways.
