I think the travel aspect is over-rated. It's no big deal for the 49ers to go to Baltimore or New York to play. Just like USC and UCLA going to Chicago or New Jersey or Maryland is no big deal.
Also the travel to Lexington, KY and Columbia, MO for non-revenue sports is not just some bus ride for the majority of SEC schools. Oklahoma will fly to Lexington and Columbia, SC for non-revenue sports. The OU golf team and volleyball team will fly to the Eastern SEC schools midweek.

Flying from Norman, OK, to Florida or South Carolina has nothing on going from Los Angeles or Seattle to Newark, NJ, or College Park, MD, for a midweek trip.
Not great for the SEC. Insane for the PAC schools.
At least teams in the same conference as Hawaii use a trip to the islands as a selling point for playing in a lesser conference.
