Have to be honest, would have though the Mediterranean was larger compared to the lower 48 than that.

Same. This doesn't feel right, but I did a quick wiki search and the US (total, including Alaska) has an area of about 3.8M square miles. The Med is about 1M square miles. So it's certainly plausible.

I was never under the impression the Med was real big. Los Angeles to Atlanta seems about right
