The problem is the old myth of making one tough. Improper hydration even if it doesn't kill you prevents an athlete from training at 100% which prevents them from being the bet they can be when it is time to perform. If they need mental toughness training just push them harder when they are properly hydrated. You generally won't find elite or professional athletes training purposely with inadequate hydration, it is beyond stupid and we know better now.

Yeah, you gain nothing by seriously dehydrating your players. Some people are too stupid to be coaches.
