I cannot for the life of me understand why having a good upbringing with a loving family is a bad thing

Because America’s culture is completely broken.
Look at the music that is popular. Look at the “hero’s” in the movies/shows Hollywood is producing. Look at the polling data showing values being embraced by average Americans.
We are undoubtedly a culture in decline

his father and mother being together and taking a couple nice pictures doesn't mean his dad wasn't an abusive drunk gang member or something.
eta: his high school is 79% minority and the average household income of that town is less than 41k.
