And disguise it with some cheap-looking plastic so that they think it's not going to do any damage to their vehicle when they hit it.

Guy here in town did that due to his mailbox getting destroyed frequently and had to go to court because a lady was driving and had a seizure and hit his mailbox. I'm not sure what ever came of it but had to go in front at a judge since his mailbox didn't "give" .

Put that 2 feet in in front of the mailbox. They will hit that first, and disable the car from the collision. Your mailbox should be safe. If not, at least now you know who hit it.
