I've tried a full VPN in the past, but visiting something secure (like online banking) always makes me nervous.
Plus, I noticed little irregularities like my voicemail notifications getting significantly delayed.
For now, I just use a "fake" VPN profile on the local device as an ad blocker, etc. but only for certain apps.

I don't really use a VPN on my phone. I don't really use my phone for anything like that anyway so I can't really say what would be best.
If it's a banking app you're probably pretty secure due to the securities it takes to build it, but much different if you went to the actual webpage.

I use a VPN on my PC because I torrent from all kinds of places. I didn't before when I used a private site, but once I got the automated stuff setup, I had to. I got a DCMA email almost immediately when I started using public trackers.
