Reed is particularly adept at putting himself into situations that appear more dangerous than they are at the time. He can ride the edge like no one else. It helps that he's done it tens of thousands of times, and that he seems to have a sixth sense about tornadic storms. He doesn't really panic despite the excitement he shows, and he always has an out.

The problem is that the "Monkey see, monkey do" kicks in and many others start believing they have the same skill and experience.
