I’ve always thought of them as Texas Blues rock, and then they went into more pop rock territory in the 80’s, but they always kept that blues influence going at one level or another. They’re similar in certain ways to Skynyrd, and the fan bases are very entwined I think (I’m a big fan of both).
All of this. and Amazing Rhythm Aces was the perfect Southern rock band, they just couldn't stay together long enough.
