ETA: if they didn’t enjoy the privilege of letting the US ensure their continents safety their retirement age would be 85.

My guess is that the original French retirement age was based off the idea that VERY few men of fighting age in WWI would survive to the age in question.
That became more of a problem as the next few generations came along.
