This reminded me of one of the other strange things that happened in this house. For a while we had a corner hallway that was fricky. It was like someone was there. The fricking cats would look at it, the kids were scared of it. For no reason. Nothing was there. The cats part is what was strange and perplexing to me. For like 2 months they’d be looking over there or sitting around there just looking. Wife had her spiritual people do their thing and it seemed to go away.

You had mice in the walls. Cats can sense/hear/smell them. Your kids were probably wondering what the cats were looking at.
Then, the mice died/moved/eaten by cats.
