Speaking of advancements, the Merlin went from 1,000 HP in the first production engines that went in Spitfires to over 2,000hp in the ones they produced for the de Havilland Hornet. (Even though the Hornet never made it to operational status by the end of the war, the Merlin's were upgraded for the Hornet to be a long range fighter in the Pacific)
