I don't consider the color episodes to be part of the canon.

I don't think anybody does. They had the perfect character to take over for Barney in Jerry Van Dyke, introduced him in the the last B&W, but lost him to another show before the next season. It wasn't just the crappy characters in the color episodes, it was the color itself. It didn't just kinda take away the magic, I don't anybody realized how ugly as frick the sets were until the color episodes. It was hard to look at. Also it's been said that Andy checked out after Don left. His acting sucked in the color episodes, he didn't even seem like the same guy

It's almost like the entire premise of the show changed. Instead of solving the town's problems with simple country wisdom, Andy became someone who was annoyed or exasperated with everyone all the time.

Some have theorized that Griffith's real life personality came out more in these later episodes. Griffith himself admitted he was much more like the grouchy Ben Matlock than the easy going Andy Taylor.

I've been watching Andy Griffith since I was a kid. Still watch it daily and can pretty much recite the lines in each episode. I have never watched a color episode. Can't stand them.
