The cap hit aside, I would think you would want to try to avoid being in the soft-middle which is paying a big salary to a player who is not a big upgrade. The difference between the best and let's say 6th best qb to be generous is not massive. The gap between 6 and 14 in terms of production over replacement value is pretty big. What gets you askew is paying what it takes to get the 14th best qb (if that's truly where Carr is) when it is out of whack with what he can deliver. Being saddled with it for 3 years and the accompanying cap hit when you move on I think is a real issue.

Will be interesting to see if they want to overpay for a league average qb. How much better would Carr make the Saints over, let's say Cooper Rush who is average at best? How much better would Carr be than Mayfield? I wouldn't think the gap would justify the cost.

I have him in the 10-12 range, but that's a debate for a different day.

What's funny about a lot of the comments about $35M being too much, is that would actually put him at 8th highest paid QB for 2023. And that is before Lamar, Burrow (rumor is they are working on a new deal), Garoppolo, Daniel Jones all get their new deals. Jimmy G & Jones may not land over $35M, but they will be in the discussion.

To be the 14th highest QB, after the above 4 deals are done, would have his cap hit around $30M
