Per BBC LINK
I read on another site that he had a plane ticket to leave Turkey only a few hours before the earthquake hit. He was off to France to sign with a club there since he wasn't getting much playing time at Hatayspor.
Edit- found a bit more in the Sky Sports article, including mention of his planned travel that day.

That is horrible news. May he rest in peace.
Atsu had scored the night before for Hatayspor.
Unfortunately this was somewhat expected, as Atsu and the technical director of the team have both unaccounted for since 12 days ago.
By the way, Hatayspor (14th of 19) and Gaziantepspor (10th of 19) have withdrawn from the league this year. My understanding is they will be back in the Super Lig next year.
Last year the league’s name and crest were changed to commemorate the life of former Turkish international player Ahmet Çalik who died in a car accident in the middle of the year at age 28.
I have no doubt this year will have the same dedication to Atsu. And there are probably a couple of guys who lost a teammate in successive seasons. Terrible news.

This is crazy because I remember posting a week or so ago that there was a report saying that he was found alive
