I played a pretty substantial amount of time and didn't accomplish a whole lot.
The back breaking moment occurred when I landed on a planet (Mars?) with my lander. Apparently my rocket engine was barely longer than my landing legs and slightly broke on landing. My Kerbal was stuck, my hopes crushed, and I just couldn't do it anymore.
Couldn't even muster the strength to attempt a rescue mission.

I never had a successful manned mission outside the main planet and its moons (Mun and Minmus), just a couple of probes.
I had great fun building stations, though. It would get buggy with a high part count and that usually ended up with a restart. Getting a communication network up and running was rewarding as well. I wasn't particularly good with planes/spaceplanes, but once I figured out the basics of rockets I was good with those and, eventually decent with landers.

Be glad you never made it to Eve Jeb is a permanent resident in my save. Tried to rescue him a couple of times, and after 8 game years or something, I just broke the bad news to him and moved on.
