I wasn't born there but have lived there 3 different times for a total of 23 years - left last time in 2006 but I still visit there occasionally for personal/business trips.
It's a great area - largest population in Alabama now. Great job market - current unemployment is under 2% - housing costs are very reasonable - $300-400k will buy a new brick home w/amenities. Since DoD/NASA/DoJ are major employers, area is damn near recession-proof.
If I were to move back, I would buy a place on Lake Guntersville, 20-30 miles east of Huntsville. Easy commute and fantastic lifestyle IMNSHO.
