HS wrestling is pretty popular in the midwest but I think the lack of money to be made post-HS puts a cap on how big it can be nationally. The Olympics are cool but if you are a top athlete why would you focus on wrestling when you can potentially make millions in other sports? I recall that a few years ago there was an attempt to start a professional freestyle wrestling league but I think it fizzled out pretty quick.

The two most famous Olympic wrestlers are guys who went/going to pro wrestling Kurt Angle and Gabe Stevenson.

There are tons of pro wrestlers who wrestled in college, Brock Lesnar among them.

So there is money, more money in fact than to be in Greco Roman wrestling or freestyle,
Which would be a miserable life cutting weight all the time.

While I don’t think they are making millions there is money to made in wrestling. The wrestlers training for the Olympics now have Regional Training Centers and some programs like Penn State’s RTC can bring in $6 million annually to train and pay the senior wrestlers. The college benefits by having the college wrestlers practice with the pros. There are also a lot more endorsement opportunities and a lot of athletes are capitalizing on this.

Because they love wrestling and don't want to have to literally fight for a living in MMA. Most wrestlers are too small for the NFL so that's usually not an option.

Wrestling's not a bad gig because there are a lot of opportunities to become a coach. You won't make millions but you'll keep your brain intact.
