I haven't seen a Hippie since 1976. So explain how they can be winning when they're extinct.

The whole Hippie scene was about peace, love, and tranquility outside of the the cultural norms and the standards. It was communal living, not just with each other, but with the natural world too.

They'd be antithetical to the cell phones, tablets, and other electronic standards of today. Still wanting to chew on nuts and berries far from pre-packaged mass produced fast foods and chain restaurants as possible. They definitely would not be into rap and the Eurobeat synthetic music of today too.

And that^ is what became of the hippies. They "faded away" because they got left in the dust of progress. The end of the Gold Standard was pretty much marked the end of the hippies. That was the acceleration point for social change in America especially. With the more readily available economic means, culture shifted into a higher gear and changes occur more rapidly ever since.
