The teams that hoist the trophy at year's end are ALWAYS top 10, if not top 5 in recruiting. The odd JJ or honey bear doesn't change this fact.

Hassan Reddick was a WALK ON at TEMPLE. He became a first round pick and is now an all-pro for the Eagles. Temple signs 25 players that were slightly better than Reddick every year (coming out of HS). Once every couple of decades, a diamond emerges from programs like that. They never win big though because they don't recruit at a high level.

You need to stack blue chip on top of blue chip to win big in college football. Luckily, LSU is one of the half dozen or so schools that can do this. All the others are just whistling Dixie.

Amen. No matter how many times the paths of Jefferson, Hester, or Arik Gilbert are recited as proof that "rankings don't matter," the results actually show that programs with sustained on field success and hardware to prove it are sustained top recruiters who stack top 250 and top 100 talent year after year. Absorbing a miss like a Brockermeyer is possible when you have waves of top talent to develop.

So, even though rankings can fail on the micro level where there is a lot of volatility, rankings are meaningful on the macro level.

Jefferson is a great story. Bama, Georgia, and even LSU are also great stories built on the foundation of stacking talent.

For some reason there is a major disconnect for people on this issue despite clear evidence.
