My dad passed a few months back. I have been doing his taxes the past few years with turbo tax. He usually gets about a $15 refund from federal and owes $0 to state.

Do I need to file for him this year? Is there any issue with my filing for him and his having passed?

Sorry for your loss.

I assume he was single at his death?

You can file the return as personal representative. If he was due a refund, file Form 1310 with the tax return. Turbotax also allows you to mark a decedent and enter in the date of death, so you will want to do that.

I filed for my mom after she passed. I had to fill out the 1310 and provide a copy of the death certificate. The refund was sent to me.

You should file a final return for him and include a death certificate

Thanks for this thread. I will be filing for my deceased MIL.
If your dad had an IRA, don't forget RMD.
