We understand the rules. The rule is stupid, that's the issue. It used to be that it was a catch if the ball never touches the ground (which, in this case, it did not). Simple.

But it's much easier to control the game if the rule is somewhat vague and left to interpretation.

I can guarantee you that sometime in your life, if you watch enough football, that same play will be ruled a catch.
