You first have to understand the anatomy and biomechanics of a great toe and how much of an impact it makes in an athlete's first step/jump off. Ingram has a grade 2 MTP sprain (Turf toe). This is a sprain of the first MTP joint caused by forced hyperextension of the great toe as it strikes the ground. It is diagnosed within a scale of 3 grades.

This issue can linger for months; and by months I mean 6-12. Although most grade 3 sprains take this length of time to heal, it is very possible to reinjure it simply by pushing off of it when getting out of bed. This is one of the toughest and most over-looked sports injuries because it sounds so simple. This is nothing to the extent of a lingering hamstring or quad injury in terms of debilitating, but it is pretty close. The joint will heal, but is usually never the same after this injury - which is fine. Think of it like the infamous "plantar fasciitis" which I am sure some of you had to deal with in your lifetime. How long did this take to heal - weeks or months? Sure you were able to use your feet and even run, however, you paid the price for it after.

In terms of his return, my guess would be sooner rather than later.. As generic as that is, there really is no timeline. It goes by how the patient feels, not what the textbook says (ironically). Based on his recent videos, I would say he is close - maybe 2-3 weeks? I suspect he will come back right before or around Zion's return. Why push through this injury and risk further damage? Let it heal now so that we won't have to deal with it again later.

And yes, he is close to returning, but all it takes is one forceful/wrong step to create a 1-2 week setback. As a player he will be fine.. I know it is annoying to fans with how conservative our staff is, but once the playoffs start, it will be a different ball game. Lets get healthy so we can finally play as a unit.

Hope this is informative to some.
Go Pels!
