Germany is probably a top 3 place in the world to drive. Great roads, drivers obediently follow the laws, etc. If you drive there you'll be pissed the USA isn't better.
IMO a great tour of that area would be to rent a car and go to Neushwanstein, stay the night in Innsbruck, drive to salzburg to stay the night, Eagles nest, Herrenchiemsee, etc. Plenty more to do all around there also. That's only like an 8 hour loop.
There's some other great castles all around that area.
