Life expectancy has gone up, wages and the % collected has also increased as well.
SS has become the retirement plan as there are few opportunities outside govt jobs offering a pension.

Anyone having that attitude is in for a rude awakening. Every single job has 401k matching. Relying on Social Security for your retirement plan is ridiculous.
