Going to spend a weekend at the camp at Sam Rayburn in March. Has anyone ever played the course over there? It looks to have a little bit of elevation change through the hills.
Anyone who’s played it have opinions on facilities, layout, condition, pace of play, etc.?

Millions of $$$s went into the course some 10 years ago. Most went into the clubhouse/restaurant with more development in the works. Good food and drinks! Go check out The Stump nearby on the Hwy 255 too.
That course is generally in good to great shape. Use to be a 3rd 9 that has yet to be restored that I always found the most fun.
There are a few holes with elevation changes and a few more where elevation can come into play depending on how the hole is played. For the most part the course can play rather flat and that makes the holes with change seem drastic in comparison. For example, #1 is a dog leg left par 5 with a creek that runs in front of the green and it feels 50' below the hole. But the fairway is basically level with the green so any elevation difference depends on if you can go for the green in two or have to layup short which leave a severe uphill wedge shot.

I played it around Labor Day I believe and it has been the nicest course I have played. Not saying much since I started playing at the beginning of the summer. Have played Cypress Bend, Lsu, Huntington Crooked Hollow and Querbes in Shreveport.
The course was in great shape and the pace of play was great. We didn’t wait for any shots. I showed up without a tee time but the lady did say I should call if I wanted to play weekends when I asked her how busy they typically were. Club house is super nice but didn’t eat there. Pro shop is small but nice.

Several years ago, 20 of us played there for 3 days. One of the mornings, we were delayed by weather. While we were waiting, some of us were hanging out on the patio, overlooking the course. We walked by the pro shop window, and the attendant was looking at porn on the check-in computer. Guess he needed something to do to pass the time....
On another note, the course has a great layout and plays fair. Like others have said, the clubhouse is nice, and there are some good food offerings for dinner.

Going with CG in March. Is it pretty much 3 wood/4 iron off the tee like it looks with the doglegs or can you hit driver a decent bit?

Always wondered about this place, one of the few places in this part of Texas I haven't played that l've wondered about.

I only played the front nine but if I remember correctly you should be able to hit driver on most holes. I know I did but that not saying much cause at the time the I was topping most of my drives.
The only thing I don’t like about the course was the houses on the side of the course. Wasn’t many but enough to bother me.
I plan to go back soon. If I go before March I’ll report back

Appreciate the help. Did they flip the nines? Everything I've read shows the front nine to be the one with elevation change. The 9th finishes over the water towards the clubhouse.
Their website shows the opposite, with the front 9 being the flatter of the 2 with most of the straighter holes.
All I know is the 9 that are designed by RTJ look to be the much better of the 2.

Website has it stated incorrectly. The current layout has the front 9 start and end at the clubhouse. Those are the RTJ designed. The back 9 is not near the clubhouse, in fact it is a bit of a cart drive to get there.
Most par 4's and all the par 5's should be driver off the tee box. Unless you are bombing it 280+ and playing up a couple boxes.

They did state when I was there that the 9s had been flipped. The front 9 are easier holes and they were all pretty flat. Did not start or end at clubhouse. It was a couple minute cart drive around the pond. Kinda of goes off the right side of the club house by the driving range.
Back nine starts at the club house and goes left. Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. I thought I played the front nine.

For a while the 9's were flipped, but that was years ago when they started the clubhouse renovation. Last time I was up there was May of last year. We tee'd of the par 5 near the proshop/clubhouse just like every other time I've ever been there, except during the clubhouse renovation year.

Looks like they flipped them as recently as Labor Day per his post. Looking at the layout of the course it looks like the better move to me.

I don't know about that.
It was nice to see if #1 tee box was open or backed up as you warm up or putt on the practice green. Or if you forgot something in the truck or need a last minute bathroom break before teeing off. Instead of only taking 2 mins, now it will take the better part of 10 mins to get there and back. As someone already mentioned its 2-3 mins to drive from the clubhouse around the pond to that 9.
Having played it both ways, there wasn't much of a difference which went first. That said if I was playing 27 I would want to hit the RTJ 9 twice. That's my preference.

Im checking out the website. It looks like they are dumping a ton of money into this place. It should be pretty cool once its all done.

It was Labor Day 2022. I could be wrong about the flipped 9. But I’m pretty sure I played what they called the front 9 and mentioned they had been flipped. Definitely didn’t play the par 5 that you tee off at by the club house

Nice course not overly long but a little tight in spots. They re-did all the greens years ago and built a nice club house too. Ben Crenshaw's co. did the greens and they are way better than before. There are 3 nines, blue, gold and the green. They closed the green course and didn't mess with it during the re-do, but I hear they are going to open it back up. Fun as hell course(green) but tight as a hell with only a few holes you can use driver. The order of play used to be blue, gold and green if you wanted to play 27. They changed the nines I believe is because the gold finishing hole was about 200 yds from the clubhouse. The blue number nine is in front of the clubhouse, makes sense. Real nice carts and not overly expensive, although we mostly play it during the week.
