My thing is we made a bad hire and we didn’t have to do that. Even though we knew we might have to fire Wade hiring McMahon looked like we were unprepared and hadn’t even made an effort to vet candidates. Like we had nobody watching basketball to see who was out there.

Meh. This is easy to say in hindsight. McMahon has had success finding talent that others overlooked (Ja Morant) and kept winning after he moved on to the NBA. We were limited to mid-majors or retreads with baggage and his resume was pretty damn good considering the situation at the time. I was surprised he took the job, frankly.

Mid major coaches are hard to project. Some make the move up with relative ease, some take time, and others flame out. McMahon is going to take time at the very least. But that doesn’t mean looking around longer would have brought us anyone different.

Plus, McMahon is seen as squeaky clean. That’s exactly what Woody was looking for after Wade. That’s a common reaction from an AD looking to change the culture around a program.

Like I said, when we hired him my response was “frick” because I’d seen his teams and there was nothing that translated to suggest a winning P5 coach.
