I’ve wondered how Silence of the Lambs would be received today. It equates gender confusion and trans with being a murderous psychopath.

...actually, in the movie Starling says that there is no link between transsexualism and violence and that transsexuals are very passive. Dr. Lechter responds that Billy only thinks he is a transexual, but is not.
But, most people overreact to everything without truly considering all of the details, so you are probably correct...people would still have a problem with it.

Not well. Considering Basic Instinct was picketed by LGBT protestors because Stone's character was Bi...and a psychopath and this was 1992. Imagine today?
