Why can’t he go pro first then go active duty? This has been allowed for years so why is it now a problem?

I agree, plenty of service academy grads have been allowed to peruse profession careers. And as I’ve mentioned before, there are waivers for all kinds of things in the military. Commitments aren’t just altered for athletes (see the Air Force’s Palace Chase program).
Also, those guys you mentioned were already active duty in the middle of assignments (presumably). If Carter were trying to do this two years after he commissioned while stationed in Korea or somewhere, I’d tell him tough rocks too.
