When the time came for Carter to make that decision, there was an avenue available for him to go to the NFL after graduation. Now, months away from the draft, they’re saying there isn’t.

That’s not what they’re saying. They’re saying he should be required to fulfill his obligations. Then he can go to the NFL.

Randy Shannon, Mark Richt, and Tommy Tubberville used to host training camps overseas for deployed servicemen. Randy offered a scholarship to the University of Miami to an enlisted sailor and command denied his request for discharge to attend college and play football. Not exactly the same situation, but Carter isn’t a special case and many people have been denied opportunities as a result of military commitments.

Why can’t he go pro first then go active duty? This has been allowed for years so why is it now a problem?

I agree, plenty of service academy grads have been allowed to peruse profession careers. And as I’ve mentioned before, there are waivers for all kinds of things in the military. Commitments aren’t just altered for athletes (see the Air Force’s Palace Chase program).

Also, those guys you mentioned were already active duty in the middle of assignments (presumably). If Carter were trying to do this two years after he commissioned while stationed in Korea or somewhere, I’d tell him tough rocks too.
