Most ladder stands are in pieces, you can just not add a piece of ladder. But yes, you can find short ladder stands also.

A 6-10 ft ladder stand would be a great first stand for a kid. Teach them to wait to load the gun until in the stand, get off the ground, etc. I love to hunt high but just getting off the ground can go a long ways.
