The great thing about long guns for security is that you can ram the butt-stock into the kids' heads in situations where they haven't quite earned a dose of lead yet. Not sure how well that works with muh AR ergonomics, though. I'd want an AK. An AK also demonstrates to the hood that you mean business in a way that an AR just does not.
