With a little bit of work, those can really be decent guitars. You can get the wraparound bridge with adjustable saddles from Guitar parts factory for about 30 bucks, splitable humbucker with push/pull switch at the tone pot, about a hundred bucks and a Tusq nut for another 15 bucks, a little fret work and setup.
I've got one that I really like, that's not quite finished yet cosmetically, but I'm really happy with how it plays and sounds. I really like the short scale for some things.
