Safe? Yes, but there are problems doing it this way. My experience is that it is difficult to defrost without getting hot spots that precook in the process.

My method takes a little longer but works very well. I take the GB out of its store container and put it in a ziplock bag and remove the air. Then I put it on a cooling rack and set my small countertop fan blowing on it. You would be amazed how fast you can defrost stuff using this method.
